Innovation Bootcamp

Day 1: Building Blocks

Welcome to Bootcamp!

Today we started with learning about the Startup Nation! This little country has a lot of “Chutzpa,” where failure is ok, and even encouraged. As it turns out, “innovation” requires exactly that; trying to find solutions to challenges, which may not initially work.

Yael Ophir, Executive Director of HealthIL, spoke to us about the Israel Innovation Institute’s goal to transform innovation through HealthIL’s platform. When it comes to meeting the needs of Healthcare Organizations, HealthIL takes the “Challenge Centric Approach:” Looking at all the stakeholders in an organization to find their unique challenges and build a framework for a more focused solution. HealthIL emphasizes staying away from a “yes-or-no solution” approach.

Romi Davidor, Director of CatalystIL, focused on how creating and implementing innovation is hard, and why organizations struggle to work with Start-Ups. She introduced us the tothe world of CatalystIL, where they believe in building a community which promotesthe profession of Innovation Management throughout various sectors. With the “Warm Up” workshop, our group worked in teams of 6 to decide on specific needs in our field: Healthcare organizations. Our ideas ranged from legal regulations for an innovation office, appointing leaders, to interdisciplinary thinking, and much more.

From all of this, we were introduced to the 6 building blocks of Innovation Leaders:

1. Challenge Identification

2. Ecosystems and Collaboration

3. Culture of Innovation

4. Cross-Organizational Infrastructure

5. Open Innovation Management

6. Innovation Project Management

The foundation of our Bootcamp!

Shachar Larry gave us an entertaining look at “Ecosystems and the Age of Collaboration.” Collaborating hopes to come up with a double-sided value, but we need VARIANCE. As innovators are only 2.5% of the population, a resistance to change is their biggest battle.

So how do we deal with this? Well, be cunning! Find the pivotal people who will truly benefit from a possible change, and make them your key players. Find the emotional drivers, and play them.

Just looking at our group, we have our own tools in “variance,” so let’s use them.

FIRST BUILDING BLOCK CHALLENGE! (See working can be fun!)

Challenge Identification: Just like all roads lead to Rome, think actively on how you can use these building blockto navigate to your own organization.

Dorin introduced our first block by talking about how Digital Health can be used to transform the healthcare world.  Things like telemedicine, wearable & bio-sensing equipment, and even patient empowerment can work to progress our efforts.

Healthcare organizations and Startups have a common challenge in literacy. With a lack of effective communication, they need people like us to bridge the gap!

So how do we even start? (My brain hurts too!)

Our teams worked on the 6 main areas of interest the group (based off the survey),and developed detailed challenges for each issue. Some of our results included; tools for secure data collection, family genetics used for prevention and prediction, cross-organizational communication, & etc. However, and quite surprisingly, the challenge that was voted the most valuable to an organization, economy, and the patient: “Optimization of Bed Management.”

I would say as a whole, we were all pretty shocked by that one….Maybe it was time for a midday coffee break?

Next Step?

Our teams had to take those larger challenges and build sub-challenges. We had to dig deep. But we will continue this process tomorrow….

In the meantime, Adi Ben-Nesher from Microsoft came to speak to us about how they see DATA as their key player. With large amounts of data, they hope to make the healthcare system more personalized, precise, and preventative. I like to think of that as the 3 P’s! They aim to close the communication gaps we often see between health care professionals and their patients. With AI, open innovation ecosystems, and research they empower all dimensions of care.

Maya Adulamy from Maccabi Research and Innovation Institute spoke about so many amazing things, like K Health, that they have been working on.  They are currently working on things like a “cloud” for patient information & easy accessibility, and even digital pathology!!

Well that summed up our day at Start-Up Nation Central…now on to the Cocktail Party!

We all looked amazing, if I do say so, and ready for our final session of the day with Nir! We met Israeli Innovators who helped us develop tips and tools to work within our challenges and goals of our building blocks for this week.

L’Chaim Everyone! Drink some wine…and let’s get ready for Day 2!!
